Our garden used to be part of a railway sidings and has been subject to all sorts of spills over the years. This page is a diary of how we are turning it into a productive vegetable patch and a nice space to spend time when the weather is good.

Laying the vegetable beds. They make an interesting shape but are not conducive to growing much!

Recent rains have brought up the problem of the non-draining garden again that we thought would be solved by laying the patio so well. A little spring has sprung so we are now digging an irrigation channel to join into a soak-away.

The patio is done!

The garden is now under a lovely crisp blanket of snow – a white Christmas perhaps?

It is definately a case of “rain stops play” now. Two weeks of rain and and the odd flurry of snow. Nothing is going to tempt me out into the garden in this weather to continue with the re-designing of the garden. I think the re-design may have to wait until the New Year. Still, on the bright side I can do nice inside jobs like choosing seeds!

I have been doing some planning using a brilliant programme on the web. It is called GrowVeg and it has loads of information on growing and a planning tool so you can draw out your garden to scale (very handy if you are replanning like me) and add your vegetables and fruit. They are all categorised and give advice on companion planting etc. You can also get a free trial for a month after which, it is £15 to subscribe for the year.

Hi Natalie, love the new theme. You’re right, there must have been all sorts of stuff on it over the years. Good luck with the transformation.
